Small Action Still Matters

Small Action Still Matters

What’s on my mind?

I hear a lot of chatter about what other people can do, or should be doing. It’s wonderful that we live in a time when people can share their opinions openly and feel heard. At the same time, I wonder if our focus on what others should be doing has grown too large.

If I stay in my lane and focus on what I can control, isn’t that a better and more satisfying approach? I get caught up in it too. In fact, I’m open to the thought that I may be doing it right now in this very writing.

So, rather than spend any additional time on what I think others should be doing, I’ll stay with what I can control.

In the first 20 days of taking coffee grounds from a local coffee shop, we’ve kept 186 pounds of material out of the landfill. I was a part of that.

I just collected and set aside 70 large trash bags of leaves from local youth sports fields. I estimate that’s about 1,000 pounds of material.

I’m also working on how to take all 500 pounds a week of spent mushroom blocks from a local mushroom grower.

At times, I feel like it’s not a large enough effort to matter. Then I think about what would happen if everyone did even a fraction of it. How much difference would that make?

I find myself getting caught up in how little difference I can make. Then I remember: it’s what I can control. And it’s better than ignoring the problem and doing nothing.

By focusing on what I can control, and trusting that small action still matters.
